An Alchemy of Natural Dyes & Root

The cellulosic fibres of root soak up natural dyes to create a spectrum of colours

Reds and orange dyes come from madder, cochineal, lac or logwood. Meanwhile, purples and blacks can be achieved by using logwood or gallnut. For greens, chlorophyllin is the key ingredient, while blues are produced from woad and indigo.

Like a straw hat, the root will last for many years if kept from the elements. Occasionally it’s mounted on steel wire to make it more functional.  Both the steel and the electrical parts are designed so that they can be easily dismantled at the end of life to be reused, recycled or repurposed.
