As part of an investigation into creativity utilising non-hydrocarbon resources, traditional woven materials from the past meet biofabricated materials of the future.

Studio Amos is a craft studio based in the South East of England. They grow and harvest willow to make contemporary woven objects, celebrating traditional materials and craftsmanship. For the collaboration with Rootfull, the team skilfully worked to weave coracle structures to support the root textile.

The simple coracle, a small, light boat, embodies a craft tradition predating industrialisation with themes of journeys, waterways, and our basic relationship to nature.

The three resulting sculptures, created by Rootfull for Installation at Messums, represent a dialogue across time, considering both traditional woven materials from the past and the potential for biofabricated materials in the future.

ROOTED: Material Ecologies, exhibiting at Messums West, Wiltshire.

With grateful thanks to Studio Amos for their skilled willow basketry.
